What you think you know about tobacco may surprise you

Sidestream smoke

Many anti's refer to the fact that no secure level of SHS exists. But what does exist is a list of maximum concentrations for the components of tobacco smoke.

This table provides an overview of these concentrations for a room of 100 square meters. The last column shows the number of cigarettes that should be smoked in that room before a dangerous level is reached.

Levels of Sidestream smoke emissions of chemicals in a closed and non-ventilated room of 100  m3

It does not look like these enormous amounts will be reached in a normal environment, at work or at home.

A computation

Assume the room has a height of 2,5 mtr. Then the surface would be 40 sqm. Say that we put 40 smokers in that room, each one having 1 sqm. The calculations show that, if every smoker smokes one cigarette per 5 minutes, they should smoke *continuously* for 2.4375 hours to reach the worst limit. How many smokers will the middle one be able to see after this time? It will be too foggy to see more then the people directly around you.
And... surprise, after about an hour all oxygen would have been used in the room causing Sudden Smoker/Cigarette Death syndrome ;-)

Time= (1170/40)*5 minutes
= 146.25 minutes
= 2,4375 hours

The statement of course is completely crazy. If there would be no lowest levels, then cars wouldn't be allowed either and candles couldn't be lit.

Combustion is a normal, natural process to which humanity has gotten used to during it's evolutional process. If we would ban all smoke, humanity would likely end up in an incubator.

    CDC notes that ETS is diluted in the air before it is inhaled and thus is less concentrated than MS (mainstream smoke).  Further, ... on the basis of urinary cotinine concentrations, the NRC [1986] concluded that non-smokers exposed to ETS absorb the equivalent of 0.1 to 1.0 cigarettes a day.  On the basis of 1985 data, NIOSH estimates that each cigarette smoker in the US smokes an average of about 21 cigarettes a day.  Blood and urine samples analyzed for vapor phase nicotine indicate that nonsmokers exposed to ETS absorb about 1% of the tobacco combustion products absorbed by active smokers [NRC 1986: DHHS 1986].  If these urine and blood samples were accurate, that would indicate that, at most, ETS would account for only 0.021 cigarette over exposure to 21 cigarettes on average.
