What you think you know about tobacco may surprise you

To the Editor:

The highly-funded anti-smoker industry (this time represented by the EPA) is on a new propaganda campaign designed to further vilify people who choose to smoke tobacco products.  Now they want to force smokers out of their own homes and vehicles if there is a 'child' (i.e., under 18) present.

Even though the EPA proved (unintentionally) several years ago that second-hand smoke is NOT at all harmful to anyone, they pretend that it does by ignoring their own findings and appeal to peoples' paranoia by stating the opposite of what they, themselves, discovered. Now the anti-smokers want children to run the household and dictate what their parents can and cannot do.

What would be ironically amusing if it wasn't so pathetic is that the EPA's own Report on the effects of second-hand smoke was vacated in 1998 by Federal Judge William Osteen.  He chastized the EPA for publicizing the EPA's pre-determined 'conclusions' before any research was begun, and slammed the EPA because their research was nothing more than "junk science".

The EPA has chosen to ignore this Federal ruling by constantly repeating what they were unable to prove. Sadly, all media outlets have gone along with these tactics because editors are, apparently, either too chicken to report the truth or too timid to check on the truthfulness of what the anti-industry spokesmen are submitting. Or is it because they're afraid to question the current version of the "No Negroes Need Apply" attitudes of politicians and employers?

Except on extremely rare occasions, editors refuse to publish letters or opinion pieces which disagree with the anti-smoker industry or their tactics because it's not politically correct to do so.  The television and radio media are taking the same position. Fair and balanced reporting of issues used to be the mainstay of journalists, but no longer.  For example, a few weeks ago, Sidney Zion of the New York Post was fired because he wrote and submitted a column about the "nicotine Nazis".  His editor refused to publish it and fired Sidney, using the absurd excuse that he had written about Israel in another article.

We who believe in a person's right to choose to engage in a legal, safe lifestyle will continue to object to the lies being spread about smokers, smoking, and second-hand smoke.  On October 12th, the First Annual World Smokers Day was celebrated by people who still cherish and believe in the Freedoms of Choice and Expression.  Press releases announcing World Smokers Day were distributed throughout the world, and yet not one newspaper, not one tv or radio station in the United States had the courage to mention it.

Once again, the suppression of publishing or mentioning opposing viewpoints on the smoking issue has been determined by the media bosses.

Isn't there one...just ONE... media outlet which has the guts to investigate the abusive hate crimes which have been perpetrated against smokers for decades?  A good place to start is to check out www.forces.org and www.worldsmokersday.org, two websites which have more than enough facts and information to whet any reporter's whistle. If only there was a newspaper editor or tv/radio producer who would have the courage to publicize the results.

Oh, well. I can dream, can't I?
